How To > How to download and read article(s) from Usenet server using 40tude Dialog

The first thing you’ll need to do is download the group list from the server you are using.  Select “online” from the menu at the top and then select “get complete grouplist”-> “get complete grouplist”.  This will grab a group list from every server you’ve configured in 40tude.  If you wish to download a group list from just one server select “online” and then “get complete grouplist”->name of your server.

At the bottom of 40tude Dialog you will see the following screen:

When the group list has finished downloading you will see a comment in the log tab confirming the download has completed successfully.  You can view the status of downloads (including group list) at any time by clicking on the “Active Threads” tab.

Once you’ve finished downloading the group list, you’ll need to subscribe to some groups to start downloading.  Click on the filtered tab at the top left of 40tude Dialog.  Your screen should now look similar to the following:

At the bottom is your complete group list.  To make finding a group easier, in the white box above the list, enter a subject you’re interested in.  40tude will automatically filter the groups so that only groups containing the string you entered are shown.  To subscribe to a group you’re interested in right click on it and select “(Un)Subscribe”.

After subscribing to a group you will need to do a full update on that group. To do that, firstly click on the “Subscribed” tab to view the list of groups you have subscribed to.  Simply double click on the group you wish to update.

Once you’ve finished updating the group, you will see a list of messages in the pane to the right of the group as shown below:

Before you go ahead and download anything, take note of the icons shown under the “score” heading.  A faded yellow icon means that the article has some kind of attachment and all needed parts are available on the server.  A faded red icon means the article has some kind of attachment, but not all parts are available on the server.

To find out more about what various icons represent, look in the help file (index tab->score).

Ok, now you’re ready to download an attachment.  To download a single attachment, simply double click on the file you wish to download.  If you wish to download more than one attachment, select the files you wish to download (using ctrl or shift keys)  and then right click on one of the highlighted ones.  From the drop down menu select “Attachments” - > “Save all attachments of all selected messages”.
