How To > How to download and read article(s) from a server Using Newsbin

Follow the following steps:

1. - After installation this will be the next screen you see. Read this information and press "next".

2. - The next thing you will need to do is enter the name of your primary mail server. If you do not know what this is please call your service provider. @Home users may enter "news" without the quotes. If "news" does not work then call tech support. Also determine if you need to authenticate on your news server, if so enter the information in the boxes. @Home users do not need to authenticate on @Home servers. Click Next.

3. - The next screen offers you a number of newsgroups. Click "Next"

4. - You are now finished basic setup of Newsbin. Click on finish and proceed to the next page in the tutorial.

5. - This is a screenshot of Newsbin. Some things may be in slightly different positions. Most internal windows are moveable and sizeable. In the middle of the toolbar at the top of the program you see a button that says "Server", click on it.

6. - Now you see the news server you entered during setup. CLick on the "Add" button if you would like to add any additional news servers.

7. - Enter the news server information including login information if needed. Click on "OK" to add the server. Newsbin will accept domain names and/or IP addresses for news servers.

8. - After you have added the servers click on "OK" and you will be taken back to the servers window as seen below.

9. - Again clicking "OK" will take you back to the main Newsbin Pro screen. Along the left hand side in the "servers" section, you will see a number of tabs. Click on the servers tab to see a list of all the servers you now have. You are now done adding servers to NewsBin Pro. NOTE - Newsbin pro is capable of downloading from multiple servers at once. Servers at the top of the list will be used first. You are able to drag servers with the mouse so you can place them in the order you want them.

10. - Next we will add newsgroups. Again in the middle of the toolbar at the top of the program you see a button that says "Groups", click on it. For now you may ignore the "Unsubscribed Groups" window below as it is highly incomplete. However you may wish to click on the button "Download Groups" and Newsbin Pro will download a complete list of newsgroups from the servers you have specified. Place a check beside the groups you would like to download from. Or you may type the names of the groups tht you would like to download from in the edit box beside the "Manual Add" button. If you are typing groups in, you need to click on the "Manual Add" button to add them, If you simply placed a check in the box below they are already added. Once you are done adding the groups you want click on "OK" at the bottom.

11. - You will now be back at the main screen but in the "groups" section you will see the groups you have added and a count of how many groups you have.

Advance Settings for Newsbin:

1. - CLicking on the "Options" button in the middle of the Newsbin Pro toolbar you will see the window below. Please choose where you would like to save the files you download to. You may want to change the section where it says "Download Post Age" as well. This setting will tell Newsbin Pro to ONLY look for files that are X many days old. Anything older than that is ignored. None of the other buttons need to be changed for the novice user. Advanced users should know what to do in those windows.

2. - The switches tab gives you quite a number of options. Since there are so many and they are already explained right on this screen we will not detail them.

3. - This tab is for users that use a modem to dial into an ISP. Normally when any program accesses the internet, dial up networking automatically starts and there is no need to change any information here. If however you use custom dialing you may enter your information here.

4. - If you use a proxy/firewall to connect to the internet you can enter the information here so Newsbin Pro is able to connect.

5. - The File Descriptions tab is also well explained on the window itself. To open the descript.ion file that is created double click on it, then scroll down the list and find notepad. Place a check in the box that says "Always Open With" and click "OK". The files will now open with notepad.

6. - The Log tab is well explained. Logs can help you troubleshoot errors if you use multiple news servers.

7. - The Thumbnails tab is quite useful for users who download a large amount of images from usenet. Newsbin will automatically create a thumbnail (smaller image) for each picture you have downloaded. You can enter an image size that you would prefer or can leave the information as is.

8. - The Advanced tab has some features that are very good, but can sometimes cause problems for medium to high volume binary downloaders. If you are a medium/high volume downloader I would suggest unchecking the "Signature Cache" and "Post ID Cache" boxes. Newsbin has filtered some files that should not have been filtered because of people posting incorrectly. All other infomation here may be left as is and is also explained quite well.
