With News Rover, you can post messages and binary files to Usenet newsgroups and send them directly to personal correspondents with equal ease. You do this when you reply to messages that you are reading, and you can also compose original messages. File attachments are automatically encoded using your choice of MIME (base 64) or uuencoding. Large newsgroup postings can be split automatically into multiple messages. Messages can be simultaneously sent to private mail correspondents and multiple newsgroups. However, the reader is strongly discouraged from posting messages to large numbers of newsgroups and even more strongly discouraged from sending advertisements as unsolicited e-mail.
Here is an overview of the message sending cycle. As stated above, message sending begins when you write a new e-mail message or newsgroup article, reply to an existing e-mail or news posting, or forward mail or news. You then use the message control screen to specify the subject, newsgroups to which the article should be posted, private mail recipients, and any external files you want enclosed in the message. Next, you will use the message editor to enter the text of the message. Then you click send on the editor menu and have the opportunity to send the message immediately or have it queued to be sent at a later time. Additional detail is provided in the following sections.
The message control screen is the central control panel for all outgoing messages. Using it, you specify everything except the text of the message:
To specify the subject, simply move the cursor to the subject field and type it in.
To specify private e-mail recipients, you can either enter the address by clicking the 'E-mail Address' button, or use the built-in address book by clicking the 'Address Book' button. You will be able to add commonly used e-mail address to the address book at this time if you wish.
To specify newsgroups to which the message should be posted, click the 'Newsgroups' button. This brings you to the same newsgroup selection tool which is used to add newsgroups to an interest group. You can select multiple newsgroups using this tool, then click 'Ok' to return to the message control screen.
You can click the 'Current Group' button to select the current newsgroup or interest group that you are browsing as the destination for the message. If you are browsing a newsgroup, that newsgroup will be added to the recipient list and the news server that it is on will be selected as the server to post the message through. If you are browsing an interest group, all newsgroups that are set to be scanned by the interest group will be selected as destination groups.
To remove an entry from the recipient list, select it and click the 'Remove recipent' button.
To edit an e-mail address in the recipient list, select it and click the 'Edit Address' button.
Normally, all of the appropriate header lines for your message will be generated automatically by News Rover. If you wish to add additional, custom header lines, click the 'Add header lines' button.
File attachments are also specified in the message control screen. To attach an external file (binary or text file) to a message, click the 'Add attachment' button. This invokes a standard Windows file locator tool with which you specify the file to enclose in the message. Note that files enclosed in messages will be formatted using either Mime base 64 or uuencoding, as specified in the Attachments configuration screen. Files which exceed the size specified on this screen will be split into multiple messages for posting to newsgroups, but private electronic mail messages are never split.
You can attach as many files to a message as you like. If you change your mind and decide not to include a file, highlight the file name in the attachments list and click the 'Remove attachement' button.
If you would like to one of your standard signature lines to the message, select the signature from the "
Signature/Tag-line" selection list. Click the 'Signatures' button to add new signature entries or edit your current ones.
Once you have specified the subject, mail recipients and/or newsgroups to post to,and file attachments, click the 'Enter Message text' button to specify the text of the message. This invokes the message editor, from which you will be able to return to the message control screen if you want, and from which you will send the message.
If you change your mind and don't want to send a message at all, just click the 'Cancel' button. Any text you have entered and attachments you have specified will be discarded, although any addresses you have entered in your address book will be retained.
