Pan is an open-source newsgroup client, available for many different platforms.
| 1. When you start Pan for the first time, it will prompt you for configuration information. Click on the Continue button to begin Pan configuration. |
| 2. Enter your name as you would like it to appear on newsgroup postings, and click on the Forward button. |
| 3. Enter your email address and enter smtp.buffalo.edu into the SMTP Server field. Leave the SMTP Port set at 25, and click on the Forward button. |

4. Enter news.buffalo.edu into the News (NNTP) Server field. |
| 5. Click on the box labeled My server requires a password to check it, and enter your UBITName and password in the spaces provided. Then, click the Forward button. |

6. Enter a descriptive label, such as UB Newsgroup Server and click on the Forward button. |

7. Click on the Save button to complete setup.

8. When asked if you want to download a list of groups, click on the Yes button. Note that this may take a few moments on a slow connection.

Your screen should now look similiar to this:
To read the messages in a group, click on that group in the left hand pane. You will then be prompted as to how many headers you want to download. If this is the first time you have viewed a group, you will most likely want to choose Download All Headers. Otherwise select Download New Headers and click on the Execute button.
To subscribe to a newsgroup, right-click on that group in the left-hand pane, and select Subscribe.
